Here Comes the Sun

A few must-haves before you hit the beach...

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is an antioxidant-packed serum that both reduces past sun damage and provides unprecedented 8 times the skin's natural photoaging protection.

Skinceuticals Sport UV Defense 45 is waterproof and sweatproof to deliver maximum protection and its ingredients are encapsulated in dimethicone to provide increased SPF with fewer chemicals, reducing the chances of irritation.

GlowFusion is the best self-tanner...it's easy to apply, looks real (not orange or streaky) and dries in a flash (and doesn't stink!). Just be sure to exfoliate before you apply!

Don't neglect your hair...comb some Rene Furterer Hydro Nutritive Serum through before going for a swim in the pool or ocean...and try Fekkai Smooth Hair and Jonathan Flexible Hair Spray when going out in the evening to cut down on frizz in the humidity.

Protect the little ones' fragile skin with Noodle and Boo's Play-Day Sunscreen. This is the only sunscreen I use on my 2 year old...it is easy to apply (it goes on like a lotion, unlike some thicker creams that take forever to 'spread' on) and really gives great protection!

Chip & Pepper turns 20!

Chip&Pepper, a brand popular with celebrities and shoppers the world over, celebrates their 20th year anniversary this year!

Once again the dynamic design duo of Chip and Pepper Foster has created the perfect pieces to spice up your spring wardrobe...including lots of cute shorts and minis. Let these be your motivation to squeeze in an extra spin-class!

Although sporting shorts doesn’t have to feel so revealing. When choosing a pair lean toward traditional styles with cuffed edges and button details to draw attention away from their diminishing length. Pair your shorts or micro mini skirt with a loose-fitting tee and blazer. A conservative top helps keep this sexy look savvy.

Stylin'

Hair...it can mean the difference between a good day and a frumpy baseball cap day.

Our new pal, Kristin, told me about some great new styling products from Biolage. I have been a fan of their hydrating shampoo & conditioner for years, and now I have some new faves to add to the list!

The Cera-Repair is a reparative conditioning treatment targeted at weak, overworked hair...perfect for those addicted to the straightening iron. Miraculous results in 5 minutes...and it comes in a little tube that's perfect for travel.

Biolage Hydra-Seal Leave-In Conditioner...again, perfect for the straightening-iron-addicted. This is just right...not thick or heavy, it offers just enough moisture to keep the hair shiny and soft!

Biolage Smoothing gel is next...I straighten my curly hair 3x a week, and am always searching for the perfect product...I've tried serums, balms, and everything in between. This gel has the perfect amount of hold without being sticky or hard...Love it!!!

The perfect finish is the Color Care Shielding Shine Mist. This is no ordinary hair spray. It is the shine of a serum and the hold of a finishing spray in one, with added color protection. I will be buying a back-up of this!

Finding a Haute Hat for Derby!

"It's not the shape of the woman's face that really decides, but the attitude of the hat."
--Frank Olive

I love Frank Olive hats. The two I have are gorgeous. Unfortunately his hats aren't very easy to find online. eBay is probably the best bet for a great Frank Olive hat.

There is nothing like the feeling of finding the perfect Derby hat!

Here are a few sites to help you with your search:

1. The Hat Society - a great site with links to nothin' but hats!

2. Hatgirl & Hatbaby - These hats are gorgeous! Very reasonably priced too. Here is a sneek-peek of just one of the many choices - (remember the Bruno Frisoni shoe and clutch....)

3. All You Need is Love, Hats and Veils - check these out! there are many gorgeous hats with biot feathers!

4. Maggie Mae Designs - tons of beautiful designs!

5. Hats in the Belfry - again, tons of beautiful choices and many large brim hats, my personal fave!

6. Hat-A-Tude - large gallery of great hats!

7. Gena Conti - gorgeous one of a kind hats

Kristi Martin, The Lexington Foundation, Inc.

HauteSpot Interview

Kristi Martin - Executive Director, Corporate Queen
The Lexington Foundation, Inc. 1504 College Way
Lexington-KY 40502 (859) 388-2620

Kristi Martin is one haute workin' momma! She has held many impressive executive positions throughout her professional career. Not to mention she is the mother of two boys; Max 6 and Brooks 19 months. How she balances it all, we will never know!

This year will mark her one year anniversary as executive director with the Foundation and she loves it! This affluent organization of women are truly impressive and amazingly dedicated to their mission. Mrs. Brenda Rice, president of the Foundation, founded it in 2004. Since then, they have awarded and pledged over $700,000 to cancer causes. Kristi also brings her extensive marketing and PR experience to help increase awareness of the Foundation both state and region-wide.

Side note: Kristi is also Hautemomma Jen Dotson's Sister!

Favorite vacation spot?
Barcelona, Spain - It is very cosmopolitan, but charming and coastal at the same time.

Favorite restaurant (local or not)?
I love Jack Fry’s in Louisville. It has been there since the ‘30s – great atmosphere.

Style icon?
I have two, Katherine Hepburn and Cate Blanchett. Katherine Hepburn was never afraid to be herself. She was elegant, yet could pull off any outfit. I think Cate Blanchett is truly graceful with amazing style. She is always sophisticated and uses individual styling with a little trend. I love her quote “You can’t please everyone, but hopefully you will surprise some people.”

Favorite gift to give?
It depends on the person. I really like to give orchids or narcissus as gifts.

What's in your beauty bag?
Right now, Mac “pinch me” blush, Mac “lucid” lipstick, Mac “spice” lip liner, Neutrogena pressed powder, Neutrogena cover stick, and Neutrogena lips gloss. Tweezers and a mirror (a must). Nail oil (instant manicure).

Favorite hotel (local or not)?
The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina. My husband and I love the arts and crafts era. Built in this period, the hotel has the largest collection of this type of furniture in one location. The hotel overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains - amazing. And with the spa, it is a perfect getaway!

Cocktail of choice?
Red wine always. For a special treat – 1997 Duckhorn Merlot.

Style advice?
OK….whoever said “Life is not a fashion show” is crazy! Always care about how you look, even if you are just throwing on something to run to the grocery. No matter what, it will always make you feel better about yourself….and you never know who you might run into. Also, if I have learned anything over the years, it has come from my hautemomma sis Jen Dotson! Be true to your own individual style, but do not be afraid to experiment a little.

What is style?
Style is what makes you feel great about yourself. I think it all has to do with actually taking the time to care about what you are putting on.

What is at the top of your style / wardrobe wish list right now?
Tod’s handbag and Tod’s ballet flats

Favorite Mantra?
My husband's grandmother had a saying "Live everyday as if was your last, but plan for 100 years". Since hearing this, I always go back to it in everything I do. This applies to so many things in life - family, finance, health, our environment and so on!

What do you love most about non-profit work and what are some of the challenges you face?
I have been in the non-profit field over the past year as executive director of The Lexington Foundation, Inc. The Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. It is very rewarding to know everyday I use my knowledge and skills to help others.

The non-profit world offers unique challenges one never faces in a corporate setting. My job is to encourage people to give to our cause. There are so many factors that affect giving - many other worthy organizations, changing economy, and more. The organization I work with raises funds mostly through events. My goal is to work consistently to reduce our cost so that the funds we raise go directly to cancer research, education, and care.

About The Lexington Foundation, Inc.
The Lexington Foundation is a nonprofit organization, whose mission is to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. The board is comprised of fifty passionate women who work tirelessly for these efforts. Since its inception in 2004, the group has raised over $1.1 million dollars for cancer research, education, and care. To date over $700,000 has been awarded and pledged to many worthy cancer organizations - most of these organizations are located in central Kentucky. Funds are dispersed through a grants process. We accept requests through July of each calendar year. Grants are reviewed in August and recipients are notified in September. Funding is provided by the end of the calendar year.

The Foundations raises these funds through successful events, The Lexington Derby Ball and The Fall Wine Celebration. We also hold a medical symposium each fall for physician education. The symposium is dedicated to a cancer topic each year. The Foundation is planning to add a public cancer forum in the future.

For more information call 859.388.2620 or go to www.lexingtonfoundation.org.

True Blue?

I've spotted blue nails on a few of my favorite celeb-gossip sites and in the magazines lately.

While I rocked the Noir Ceramic last fall, I don't think I'll be following the blue trend this Spring...well, maybe on my toes, but probably not on my fingernails. What do you think? Leave us a comment and tell us what you think of blue nails..."cute & on-trend" or "funky teenager"??

I Need This Bruno Frisoni SHOE!!!

The stiletto to me is such a work of art.

Seriously, I am a major shoe addict and when I saw this shoe by Bruno Frisoni I almost fell over,... it is soo haute!

Check out the detail of the ribbon at the toe and not to mention it is a sling-back, which we all know, or should, this is much more flattering to the leg than the ankle wrap strap.
Check it out at Vire.com

HauteSpot Interview: Fiona Young-Brown, Life Coach and more

Fiona Young-Brown - Life Coach, Teacher, Counselor and Candle Maker
http://www.fionayoungbrown.com/ - fionascoachingblog.blogspot.com -
http://www.kentishmaidcandles.com/

Fiona has lived a very interesting and adventurous life! From being born in England to living in Japan, the Bavarian Alps, Iowa and now Lexington, she had many tales to share as well as experiences. Fiona has a Ph.D. in Women's Studies and Japanese.

Not to mention she is also an amazing candle maker! She owns Kentish Maid Candles - a touch of England in the heart of the Bluegrass! These candles are wonderful! I purchased some during the holidays and I must say they burn cleaner and the smell lasts much longer than most. They are American Soy Wax, which is also lead free!

__________________________________________________________

Favorite vacation Spot?
I absolutely adore travel so I could say anywhere and everywhere. I love Paris and would love to go back. Alaska, India and Italy are at the top of my to-go list.

Favorite restaurant (local or not)?
Locally, I like a lot of the smaller, ethnic restaurants - Sugano, Tokyo Sushi, Izakaya Yamaguchi, Koreana. The Three Suns Bistro on Nicholasville road is FABULOUS! Incidentally, if you ever find yourself in Deadwood, SD, I had a memorably delicious meal once at Jakes, the restaurant above the Midnight Star casino, both owned by Kevin Costner.

Style Icon?
Katherine Hepburn. Her look was timeless

Favorite gift to give?
Candles are always a fabulous gift although obviously I'm a little biased there.

What's in your beauty bag?
I love my Clinique chubby stick in Grapevine. I don't spend a lot of time on make-up unless I'm dressing for a night out, so I like products that are quick and reliable. Mascara is always a must! I also love Avon's Be Blushed since it provides great color for my cheeks and eyes. Tinted moisturizer and Neutrogena sun block is a must as I burn very easily.

Favorite hotel (local or not)?
Several of the hotels in Tokyo. There was one in Ginza although unfortunately I don't remember its name. Japanese hotels are always wonderful because of the onsen (hot steam baths).

Cocktail of choice?
I am more of a red wine or Irish Cream girl, although I will admit to a fondness for mimosas.

Style advice?
Worry less about seasonal trends and more about what suits your body, looks and personality. Don't wear a certain color just because it's 'in'. Wear it because it brings you to life.

What is style?
Knowing what works for you and feeling comfortable and confident when you're wearing it.

What is at the top of your style / wardrobe wish list?
I'm still on my lifelong search for the best fitting and flattering pair of jeans. My other current wishes are a fitted burgundy velvet jacket and the perfect pair of Victorian style boots.

Favorite Mantra?
You don't regret the things you do. You'll regret the things you didn't do.

I like to consider myself a Renaissance Soul, meaning I do a variety of different things. I am a fully certified coach through the Coach Training Alliance and I specialize in two different markets. I coach women and couples who are going through infertility, a subject I have also written many articles on. I also coach women who want to break out of their regular routine, move past whatever fear is holding them back, and make some major (and exciting) changes in their lives. For those who are unfamiliar with coaching, it is a very dynamic process. It involves some counseling, but more importantly it is very goal focused. I am a counselor, mentor and guide rolled into one and my role is really to ensure you remain accountable to you and me. Coaching is good only if you are truly committed to making a change and are prepared to make goals and stick to them. You can learn more at my websites, www.fionayoungbrown.com and my new one, which is still under construction, www.movingbeyondfear.com.

As well as coaching, I also run my own soy candle business, Kentish Maid Candles. I started making candles as a hobby and switched to soy when I found that paraffin was very irritating to my husband's allergies. I love working with soy as it is very clean burning. I work at some craft shows, but also sell through my website, http://www.kentishmaidcandles.com/ and home parties.

We couldn't agree more...

In this month's Lucky magazine, beauty editor Jean Godfrey-June reviews a few of our favorites.

We told you about the Lipstick Queen's 'Sinner' or 'Saint' formulas in February. Godrey-June raves about her favorite, "Saint Wine". (I am more of a 'sinner' - girl)

Last month, we told you about a Haute new Skin Care Line.
I have tried the Care by Stella McCartney 5 Benefits Moisturising Cream 1.6 oz and love it! Godfrey-June prefers the Care by Stella McCartney Nourishing Elixir 1 oz worn over makeup to revive & refresh skin.

Fellow bloggers have raved about the new Chanel Les Exclusifs Fragances. They are pricey, but irresistable, with their luxe-minimalist packaging and chic names like Bel Respiro and Coromandel. Order from the Chanel Boutique in NYC at 212.535.5505.

An interview with the Anti-Aging Doctor

I recently had the chance to sit down with my friend - Anti-Aging Physician Mark Henderson of Total Med . As soon as I heard the words "Anti-Aging", I had to know more! Here's what Dr. Henderson had to say:

HMS: You are a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Physicians...what does that mean?

Dr. Henderson: "The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and application of new medical technologies for treatment of age related disease. The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine prepares physicians and health practitioners for certification in anti-aging medicine so local clinics, such as Total Med, can implement therapeutic protocols, including detection, prevention, and treatment of age-related dysfunction and disease. Membership in the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine provides up-to-date information on new advancements through on-going educational training programs, seminars, clinical and academic programs, and newsletters."

HMS: How do you evaluate and treat your patients? What are the most common complaints your patients have?

Dr. Henderson: "A comprehensive evaluation begins with an initial consultation that includes a thorough review of the patient's past medical history, family history, and present symptoms. A comprehensive work-up is ordered, which includes blood testing and/or saliva testing. A follow-up appointment is scheduled to review test results and implement a personalized treatment plan, which may consist of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, diet, and exercise. Blood testing is repeated frequently to ensure hormones are maintained at optimum levels, and monthly follow-ups are encouraged to evaluate symptoms and lifestyle changes."

"The most common complaints include fatigue, night sweats, hot flushes, irritability, weight gain, and mood swings. These symptoms may be associated with estrogen and/or progesterone imbalance, as well as excess androgens, thyroid deficiency, or melatonin deficiency."

HMS: We all want to hold off the aging process as much as possible. What are the most practical & easiest to assimilate tips you can give our readers?

Dr. Henderson: "The most practical and easiest tips are incorporated into lifestyle. Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week (5-6 days/wk). Eat a well-balanced diet, including consumption of at least 64 ounces of water a day. Multivitamin supplementation and antioxidants can also be added to the regimen. One of the most prominent mechanisms for prevention of disease is not-smoking. Also, it is important to engage in regular screenings to allow for early detection and intervention of disease."

HMS: Beyond that, what options are available to keep us looking and feeling young and healthy?

Dr. Henderson: "Non-surgical aeshtetic services are offered to complement the Anti-Aging program. Total Med offers Botox injections, Mesotherapy, and Medical Weight Loss. Botox injections are non-surgical procedures that cause relaxation of underlying facial muscles resulting in a reduction of wrinkles and lines. Mesotherapy is a non-surgical cosmetic medicine treatment that targets and results in a decrease of adipose fat cells. Medical weight loss incorporates a wide variety of services including physical exam, diagnostic testing(blood work, EKG, etc.), dietary and exercise counseling, medications if needed, vitamin supplements, regular follow-ups, and a maintenance program once goal weight is obtained."

Want to know more about the services Dr. Henderson and I discussed?

You can reach Total Med in Lexington at 859.263.0374, in Louisville at 502.964.8789, or online at TotalMedWeb.com.
