HMS: What can women in their 20's, 30's and 40's do now to decrease the need for major facial surgery later?
Dr. Majzoub: One of the most important things individuals can do is refrain from over exposure to ultra violet light from the sun or from tanning beds. Cumulative exposure to ultra violet light results in a progressive loss of elastin and collagen within the skin which over many years results in wrinkles or sagging of the skin. In addition, cumulative ultra violet exposure will lead to pigmentation changes in the skin often referred to as sun spots and possibly even skin cancer. At the reNew Medispa we offer a variety of sunblocks formulated to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Many of our sunblocks contain coated micronized titanium dioxide to offer the ultimate protection from UV light damage. Our Ti-Silc® Sun Protection Line contains, in addition to micronized titanium Dioxide, Japanese green tea which is a potent anti-oxidant to help protect against future environmental damage. Some of our products are tinted to blend naturally with your skin tones without the chalky residue common to many sunblocks. Many of our sunblocks are water proof offering total UVA/UVB protection. For those who want the tanned look we offer Ti-Tan™ sunless Tanning Lotion and Foaming Self-tanners for the ultimate tan without sun exposure.
In addition to Sunblock, we have made many advances in skin care technology to not only reverse the signs of aging but even perhaps slow the aging process. At the reNew Medispa we offer many physician directed skin care products which contain a variety of minerals, skin growth factors, vitamins, plant extracts, cytokines, microsphere delivery systems, proteins and anti-oxidants. Our most popular skin care product is the Dermesse™ Skin Health System which actually removes unwanted pigment problems caused by cumulative exposure to the sun and encourages the renewal of skin cells promoting a more youthful appearance. So proper skin care when you are younger can make a big difference on how you age.
Fortunately, science has also made many advances with non-invasive light based technology which may also affect the way we age. At the reNew Medispa we have invested in medical Omnilux™ photodynamic light emitting diode systems which emit different wavelengths of light. The light emitted from our light emitting diode lamps photo-biomodulates skin cells stimulating the production of collagen and also down regulates the inflammatory response often seen with trauma from over exposure to the sun or mechanically produced wounds. So today we can biomodulate the cellular production of cell signals needed to promote collagen reorganization for improvement in skin tone, texture and wrinkles. It sounds like science fiction but our light emitting diode systems are used not only for cosmetic purposes but also to aid in wound healing, psoriasis and vitiligo treatments.
In addition to light emitting diode therapy which may alter how we age, the reNew Medispa also offers a variety of broad band light therapies, laser treatments and peeling agents to reverse the signs of aging. I believe that our skin treatments remove many of the signs associated with aging and our medical grade skin care products help maintain the quality and texture of our skin, thus ultimately affecting how a person ages. Readers who would like more information on the most recent advances in skin care technology are encouraged to visit our web site at www.renew-medispa.com to learn more about our medical grade skincare products and therapies.
HMS: I adore my children, and wouldn't trade them for the world, but the effect that childbearing has had on my body isn't pretty. I've lost all of my weight but still have sagging skin & stretch marks on my tummy; melasma on my face; spider/varicose veins; sagging breasts due to breast feeding. What can I do??
Dr. Majzoub: Its not uncommon for females who have had children to develop weakness in their abdominal wall with physical widening of the supporting rectus abdominus muscles (“six pack” muscles over the abdomen), excess abdominal skin and sagging breasts. Child birth is a marvelous event, but the after affects can take their toll on the body. Unfortunately the stretch marks left on a woman’s body or “striae” are permanent from the stretching of the skin and alteration of the skin’s elasticity. However, we may alter the surgical appearance of a woman’s figure by improving the contour of her tummy and lifting the breasts.
The two most common procedures we perform at Louisville Plastic Surgery Consultants for the above problems are a tummy tuck and breast lift or mastopexy. The tummy tuck procedure involves tightening the rectus muscles in the midline to improve the abdominal contour and remove both unwanted skin and subcutaneous fat. So we essentially tighten up the abdominal wall and then move the entire abdominal skin down toward the bikini line. All the scars are hidden in the bikini line, the belly button stays were it is, the skin around it is advanced downward. We can remove a lot of skin and fat, for those individuals who have striae, this may make some improvement in their over all appearance.
In addition to improving the abdominal area we often will perform a mastopexy to improve a woman’s breast shape. As a woman ages (and often following pregnancy), a woman’s breasts sag. The nipples can be raised to a more youthful position as in your younger years with a mastopexy or breast lift. In this procedure the nipples are raised by reshaping the breast tissue. The procedure is designed to minimize the scars while maximizing the youthful breast shape. Often women choose to augment their breasts at the same time to enhance their breast shape or volume. This can be achieve with saline or the new FDA approved Silicone implants available at Louisville Plastic Surgical Consultants. HMS: What can I do to get ready for bikini season?
Dr. Majzoub: Our most common request for the summer season is laser hair removal. We all know that unwanted facial or body hair can be difficult to deal with, often requiring waxing, electrolysis and shaving. At the reNew Medispa we can remove unwanted hair growth with advanced laser technology or intense pulse light therapy. Both methods eliminate unsightly hair growth once and for all. Our computer based lasers and intense pulse light therapy systems can remove hair from all parts of the body including the legs, arms, cheeks, underarms, back, ears, bikini line, and chest. With laser hair removal highly concentrated light energy is delivered to the hair follicle, destroying it. Computer parameters are adjusted according to your skin color, hair color, and ablation depth. Our system has an integrated skin cooling system for your comfort during your treatments. Our intense pulse light system is similar but utilizes an intense pulse of light to destroy the hair follicle. Several treatments may be necessary depending on your body's hair growth cycle, the density of hair in the treated region, your body weight, age, body's hormonal state, skin color and hair location.
In general we recommend that you have your hair removal when you are not tanning (we don’t recommend tanning in general) as this may affect the absorption of the light energy used to treat your hair follicles. Fortunately with two uniquely different hair removal systems we can treat all types of hair color.
The reNew Medispa offers the latest sunscreens and sunblocks. Our preferred line is the Ti-Silc® Sunblock line which comes in many different SPFs 45-60. This product line offers both UVA/UVB protection with advanced micronized titanium dioxide, its waterproof, contains Japanese green (a potent antioxidant), its ideal for all skin types, fragrance free, oil free and some of the products are tinted to match your skin tones. Our Z-Silc® line is designed to protect sensitive skin and double as a moisturizer. It offers broad-spectrum protection against the sun’s damaging rays and contains zinc oxide which provides a physical block against UVA and UVB rays. It’s not greasy and dries quickly.
Here are some of reNew Medispa’s Sun Tips for the summer!
1. Always wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen to block both the harmful UVA (the aging rays) and the UVB (the skin burning rays). Select products with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
2. Cover up! Wear tightly woven clothing, a wide hat and sun glasses when out in the direct sunlight.
3. Avoid sun exposure during the peak hours of the day which are generally from 10 am to 4 pm. During this time the sun is very strong, if you must be out use a sun umbrella, seek shade under a tree and wear proper clothing.
4. Apply sun screen 30-60 minutes before venturing out in the sun.
5. Use a higher SPF on your nose, ears, and lips- we recommend fragrance free products or a total Sunblock product.
6. Don’t be stingy, you need to apply at least an ounce of sunscreen from head to toe for protection.
7. Always re-apply sunscreen after swimming or exercise, even if the sun screen is water proof. Wear water proof sun-screen if you are going to participate in water sports.
8. Be cautious with products which may make you more sensitive to the sun.
9. We recommend sun free tans. Enjoy the look of a tan without the suns harmful rays, our recommend tanning products are Ti-Tan™ Sunless Tanning lotion and the Ti-Tan™ Foaming Self Tanner sold at the spa.
